Sofia Berberidou is a Greek coloratura soprano celebrated for her “vivid stage presence”, and her “dazzling high tessitura”. Based in Switzerland, her repertoire includes virtuosic coloratura roles as well as concert and sacred works.
A signature role in her repertoire is the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, which she has performed at Neues Theater as well as with WorkshOpera and the Bern Medical Orchestra. Further notable stage appearances include Pepita in Reutter’s Die Brücke von San Luis Rey with the Biel Solothurn Symphony Orchestra (TOBS) and Sophie Scholl in Zimmermann’s Weiße Rose at the Swiss Opera Studio. She made her debut as Papagena in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at Thessaloniki Concert Hall.
As a concert soloist, Sofia has appeared with the Thessaloniki City Symphony Orchestra and ensembles such as the Contra Tempo Chamber Orchestra and Musica Classica Bern. During her studies in Greece, she collaborated regularly with the Sinfonietta “Dimitris Mitropoulos,” performing various sacred arias and the soprano solo in Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. Her artistic activity includes numerous song recitals and concerts in Switzerland and Greece, and collaborations with conductors including Anne Hinrichsen, Christoph Campestrini, Mladen Tarbuk, Vinzenz Weissenburger, Jens Georg Bachmann, Franco Trinca, Thodoris Papadimitriou, Vladimiros Symeonidis and Georgios Vranos.
She received her training at the Bern Academy of the Arts and the Swiss Opera Studio under the guidance of Tanja Ariane Baumgartner. She also holds degrees from the University of Macedonia and the New Conservatory of Thessaloniki. Her studies were supported by the Hirschmann Grant and the Bern Academy of the Arts Scholarship Fund. Further artistic development has been gained through masterclasses with renowned artists including Adrian Kelly, Marcin Kozieł, Angela Denoke, Valérie Guillorit, Christian Hilz and Vesselina Kasarova.
Alongside her solo career, Sofia has been active for many years as a choral singer in various vocal ensembles, including the award-winning Ss. Cyril & Methodius Children’s Choir and the Mixed Choir of Thessaloniki. Since the 2024/25 season, she has been a member of the Opera Choir Academy (OCA) at Theater Basel.
